About Hamburg

The 'Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg', in the north of Germany, is a port city on the river Elbe. As a 'Free City', Germany's second biggest city forms a federal entity in its own right, in addition to the thirteen federal states of Germany. The name Hanseatic City hints at the rich seafaring history of Hamburg as part of the mighty Hanseatic League that dominated trade along the northern coast of Europe during the Middle Ages. Not only are there plenty of remnants of centuries of maritime history all over the city, this history is very much the present, with Hamburg being one of the most important port cities in the world even today. For centuries, Hamburg has established itself as a wealthy transport and economic hub in the north of Germany. Its special charme, lively culture and diversity earned it the title 'Schönste Stadt der Welt' - 'Most beautiful city in the world'. Yes, ask any 'Hamburger', this is an official title.
