The tunnel was built in 1911 and crosses the river Elbe in 24 meters depth. It offered the workers of Hamburg harbour a short way from Landungsbrücken to the other side called Steinwerder, where the main industry of Hamburg was situated. Pedestrians and bikers can use the tunnel free of charge, car driver pay 2 Euro one way.
As soon as you enter the impressive building on Landungsbrücken and follow the pathway or elevator downwards, you get a feeling for this special place and technical sensation. When crossing over to the other side, you really get the idea of how it must have been like, working in Hamburg in the beginning of the 20th century.
It's the coolest place in summertime and so refreshing when it's hot outside. On the other side there is a fantastic view waiting for you!
