I have a bachelor degree from Faculty of Architecture, Department of City Planning. I am currently a PhD student in Urban Studies/Social Policy program in University of Helsinki. I wanted to combine my love for Helsinki with my knowledge and research about the history, culture and architecture of this beautiful city, and share it with a wider audience, so I started to arrange walking tours. We will walk together in and around the city center, discovering Helsinki's secrets, learning its history, culture and traditions. Why do Helsinki people have picnic on top of graves? What was the meeting point of the bohemian people of 1880s in Helsinki? How did they build a church inside a giant granite rock? Where did Lenin hide when he was running away from the Tsarist Russia? Which statue is the one that seagulls hate the most? Where did they bury thousands of bodies during the plague? Why is the largest Orthodox cathedral located in a Lutheran country? Where can you eat the best salmon soup of your life? Why Finnish people still cheer for the opponents of the Swedish national football team? How did a Finnish architect influence generations of American architects and skyscraper designs? We will find answers to all of these questions and more, while visiting each of these less known yet important locations in Helsinki.

Emek, provided a well thought through tour that highlighted many of the facets of Finland’s history, culture, language had geography in a well paced, and appropriate lengthed walk. His tips for post walk activistes were also great. Highly recommend the walk to anyone interested in a better appreciation of Helsinki.

Insight into the Finnish character
for Emek’s tour (Tour Helsinki with a City Planner)
Emek is an engaging and interesting tour guide who weaves great stories from the significant places in his city. Each story goes beyond the place itself to give us an insight into the national character and values that Finnish people hold. It is a personal perspective from an intelligent and involved citizen.
Definitely worthwhile - although (being a planner myself) I would have liked to hear more about planning processes and issues in the city.
I thought - compared to a food tour we did the next day for the same price - it was a little pricy given we didn't even get to sit over a nice coffee, or beer...
