The origins of Sufism lie in the life and practices of the Prophet of Islam and the Quran. Sufism embraces a well-founded and thorough interpretation of Islam that focuses on love, tolerance, worship of God, and community development through self-discipline and personal responsibility. A Sufi way of life is to love and be of service to people.

Known to the west as the Whirling Dervishes, the Mevlevi Order was founded by Mevlana Rumi in the 13th century. The Order wrote of tolerance, forgiveness, and enlightenment. Today, they survive as a cultural brotherhood. Their practises are not theatrical spectacles, but sacred rituals.

The ceremony of the Mevlevi Order, known as the sema, is a serious religious ritual performed by Muslim priests in a prayer-induced trance. Mevlevi believe that during the sema the soul is released from earthly ties and able to freely and jubilantly commune with the divine. Dervish literally means ‘doorway’, representing an entrance from the material world to the spiritual, heavenly world.

Loved this class!!
My 3 friends and i took this class and we has so much fun .The owners of the studio Hakan and his wife were so artistic, and had alot of patience teaching us how to make these beautiful paintings. Their studio was very "zen".We loved spending the morning with them and had we known the class was going to be that much fun and creative we would have booked more with them that week! .Next visit we will .We highly recommend taking a class with them !!! Simply amazing!
This is what you call an actual dervish ceremony. The one you see at bosphorus tours is just for fun. This was actually spiritual. Loved it.
Great trip
Our guide was a sweetheart! I was travelling with my mom and the guide was very attentive to her, which made it an easy and memorable trip. He also definitely knows a lot about the city and told us a great deal about Istanbul while we were on the island. This is perfect for companies of 3-5 people. Excellent experience!
