Breathe with the lungs of Madrid

Parque del Retiro

Why locals love it

The wonderful Retiro park is often descriped as the lungs of Madrid – or the Central Park of the Spanish capital. An absolute favourite weekend-destination for many Madrileños throughout the year. They come here to relax, to play, to walk or simply to find shade. The Park has several cafés and is a welcome contrast to the buzzing downtown streets.

Why you should visit it

This is a must when you visit Madrid. Whether it's to soak up the sun, to take in the colours of the fall, to feel the melancholy of winter or the joy of spring. At the northern end of the park you can't miss the huge boating lake, where you can enjoy the monument to King Alfonso XII from the water. The Crystal Palace nearby is also worth visiting.

Special tip

Go through the entrance closest to the Prado-museum, to take in the romantic garden of colourful flowers - stunning during spring, summer and fall.
