Funds for the construction of the Chapel of the Treasury were not entrusted to the Curia, the church's chancellor. The funds were instead raised independently by the citizens. The chapel was inaugurated in 1646, and since then, together with the Treasury which it houses, it has belonged to the city of Naples.

In the chapel, the treasure – relics and the famous blood of St.Gennaro that liquifies three times a year – are preserved. For the Neapolitans, the blood liquefying event is an omen of good news or fatal events; each time that this has not happened, the city has suffered some great disaster
The treasure of gold masterpieces and gems is more valuable than the British Crown Jewels.
