Pik Lasel (also called La Selle mountain) is part of the Chaîne de la Selle range and is the highest peak in Haiti at 8,793 ft above sea level. Access the mountain through Furcy, where the cool air and pine forests are a welcome break from the heat of the city.

You can hike to and around the mountain without making the arduous walk to the peak itself. Locals rent horses for about USD$5 an hour (guide extra) and it's well worth the trip even if you don't go to the top. There's a waterfall about 1.5 hours up the mountain trail.
Local children hire themselves out as guides. Pick one, agree on a price (a few USD), and send the rest packing or they will follow, talking nonstop.
