Verano is Rome’s main cemetery. It’s also the oldest and most central one. Not many locals visit this monumental spot, even though it is indeed rich with monuments. It’s a peaceful place to walk when you feel like escaping the stressful San Lorenzo neighbourhood.

Set on ancient Roman burial grounds, this 19th century cemetery is something of an open-air art and history museum. Many famous Italians are buried here including Mameli, De Sica and Ungaretti amongst others. Visiting Verano is like taking a quiet walk through the history of Italian culture.
Guided tours are available.
