Emperor Galerius , the junior co-emperor to Emperor Diocletian (284-305), was born in or close to Serdica. He ruled the Eastern part of the Roman Empire from Nicomedia and here between 305-311 once he was promoted to senior emperor. And he played an important role for the Christianity for his Edict of Toleration issued in Serdica and announced in Nicomedia on 30 March 311 ACE.
For Emperor Constantine the Great (306-337), Serdica was "his Rome".
During this tour we will have a glimpse in Roman Serdica - public and religious buildings, roads, towers, amphitheatre and graveyard under St Sophia Basilica. We will explore the reasons why the Romans have built a town here, whether and why Galerius has built his palace in Sofia, and why Serdica was Constantine's Rome.
