On the north side of the Piazza San Marco you can find this richly decorated clock tower, that was built in the late 15th century. It has a display of the phases of the moon and the sings of the zodiac and it was designed surely thinking about seafarers.
According to a gruesome local legend, the two inventors of the mechanism in the clock had their eyes gouged out to prevent them from ever creating a replica. On the upper level, the winged lion of St. Mark stands against a star-spangled blue backdrop.
This clock was a very important point of reference for all Venetian seafarers.
