Why locals love it

The "Alt Wien" has a long tradition making coffee since 1936. It's charme is a typical Viennese one: the room full of smoke and the noises of people talking, the waiters offering the best Viennese rudeness (it's called charme) and the also often seen shabby chic. You hardly find another place that says more "Vienna" than the "Alt Wien".

Why you should visit it

Another advantage of this coffee house is that they serve coffee house food (Gulasch, Würstel, etc) until 2 am. Perfect if you want to grab a snack after going out or getting a midnight crave for heavy Austrian cuisine.

Special tip

Specialities: Haustorte (chocolate-nut-jam-cake), Knoblauchschnaps (garlic schnaps)

Very nice "fucked-up"-chic. Viennese love to get a drink there.

A charming cafe. The non-smoking section is insulated effectively by sliding glass doors from the smoking section at the entrance, which is nice for everyone. Ultra modern toilets, which was nice snd unexpected. The waiters were professional, helpful and polite (the rudeness of Viennese coffee house waiters is an urban myth; I have not encountered it myself).

I've a good friend from Germany who once planned a stop over in Vienna only to have a beer at Kaffee Alt Wien. :D

Classic piece of Old Vienna, this coffee house has almost every inch of wall covered by concert posters. I went for breakfast & was highly amused at the waiter stopping to suck on a cigarette on his way to make my coffee.
