The Gates of Dawn

Why locals love it

These are the only surviving gates of the city wall. If you're coming from the station, on the right you can also see a part of the old wall with crenels running down the length of it. Religious people come here to ask Our Lady of the Gates of Dawn for miracles. The multiple silver pieces lining the walls of the chapel are votive offerings.

Why you should visit it

If you're coming to Vilnius from any of the neighboring countries, Our Lady of the Gates of Dawn is probably the main reason for your visit. Once you 'enter the city' by passing through the gates, you'll notice throngs of tourists and pilgrims alike. Turn around. Look up. Yes, that's the miraculous painting in the window above the gate.

Special tip

For an up close and personal encounter with Our Lady of the Gates of Dawn, enter Aušros Vartai Chapel and head up the stairs.
