The Hainburg Castle is located at the Schlossberg Hill (291 m above the sea level), in a lovely town Hainburg an der Donau. The castle was built by Emperor Henry III in 1050. In the castle chapel the Bohemian King Przemsyl Ottokar married the Duchess Margarethe of Austria in 1252. The castle was destroyed in the late 17th century when Hainburg was overrun by the Turks. Renovation and preservation of the ruins began in 1975 and nowadays the castle is used for outdoor theatrical events.
When we arrive to Hainburg an der Donau you can choose from two options:
1) Long walk through the small streets of the town to the castle (about 30 min)
2) Shortest way to the castle (about 5 min)
We will get to the top of the hill and you can admire the ruins of the medieval castle and enjoy the stunning views. You can even see Bratislava. What is the secret of the sea shell in the walls? Slovakia has no sea!
On the way down there are two options again:
1) Long walk through the main street and two medieval town gates (about 30 min)
2) Short walk to the nearest car park (about 5 min) - we will drive through both medieval gates by car
We can stop for a coffee or you can taste a local cake.
