For more than 40 years Romania was under communist rule, so it’s no surprise that Bucharest is full of ‘souvenirs’ from its socialist past.

This 2.5-hour walking tour will give you insights about the way communism has shaped Romania. You’ll find out what life was like for the people of Bucharest up until 1989.

You’ll hear how education, religion, mass media and even people’s private lives were affected by communism – as well as the way it shaped town planning and the city’s architecture.

The tour starts with a short introduction on the origins of communism in the country. We then head to the Palace of the Parliament, built at the peak of Ceausescu's power, and finish the walking tour in Revolution Square – where a new era of democracy began.

Your guide will share lots of personal experiences and stories about life under communism. You’ll also get to hear some of the jokes that made people feel a bit better during those difficult times.

The most meaningful tour in Bucharest
This was the most vivid presentation i ve ever experienced. Elena was friendly, easy to chat with, excellent spoken English. The tour had a beginning a middle and an end. Under no circumstance i felt bored. Giving insights from a local on how people lived before during and days after the revolution is not something which you may find easy on books or documentaries.
Totally worth every cent.. Hope every city has more tours like that

Great Tour!
Mara was an absolutely wonderful tour guide! She is super knowledgable and friendly, and her love for Bucharest is palpable. Her awesome attitude cultivated a great atmosphere between everyone on the tour which made it even more fun. Not only did we get great history facts, we also got some great food recommendations too :) I'm so glad I chose to do this tour!

If you are interested in street art, you need to do this tour!
Elena was great! I was running late, she was waiting for me and showed me really nice street art and the story and meaning behind it. At the end of the tour, we even wrote an poem about Bucharest, that I enjoyed very much. Thank you. I recommend this tour strongly, if you are interested in street art and the alternative part of Bucharest.
