The first tourist trail inside the Wieliczka Salt Mine was established at the turn of the 19th century. A couple of centuries later, in 1978, the mine was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Now the largest mining museum in the world, it features an extensive collection of unique equipment that reflects the development of mining techniques from the Middle Ages to the present day.
The underground trail leads through numerous drifts, galleries, and chambers where traces of mining activity and sacred artworks depicting the mine’s history have been preserved. Additionally, the mine’s microclimate has a beneficial impact on visitors who suffer from asthma and allergies.
At the beginning of the tour we’ll walk down steps into the mine to a depth of 64 metres. We’ll then explore a number of chambers, and see underground lakes and monuments carved out of salt. The tour finishes at 135 metres below the ground. We’ll return to the surface by elevator.
