The Oldest Bookshop in the World!

Bertrand

Why locals love it

It was founded in 1732 in Chiado. First a look to the books in the window, then in the first room, you can find the new books and bestsellers. You can find any kind of book in one of the large rooms, separated by arches and organized by themes; and if you need help, just ask to one of the friendly employees.

Why you should visit it

Sit a bit browsing a book, feel the smell of books and imagine the literary club where politics and literature was discussed. In the late nineteenth century was frequented by the best Lisbon Society, from liberal and conservative to bourgeois and aristocrats (for example D. Pedro II of Brasil).

Special tip

Just around the corner (Rua Anchieta) you have another room (old storage) where you find a Book Outlet and antiques. You also find books in English.
