Lisbon had so many markets, it was where everybody would go to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, fish or meat; nowadays most of them don’t have that function. However they are being recovered and converted in expositions or workshops places. This one was inaugurated on the year 1877.

It was one of the first buildings in Portugal that uses iron and glass, two kinds of material characteristic in Europe in the second half of XIX century. If you want to shop, you can find here, at the side stores, different types of crafts, antiques and also some eateries. In the central area of the market, there is a Center for Culinary Arts.
On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the Ladra Fair takes place, just some meters from the market. You can find everything there, even a used toothbrush!!
