It was the first building in baroque style in the country, with the first stone launched in 1682. However the works lasted so long that gave rise to the popular expression “works of Santa Engrácia” to designate something that never ends. It was only in the year 1966 that the church was completed. Dated 1241, it has suffered over the years: with the earthquake of 1755 (a lot disappeared like altar paintings, vestments, treasure) and a devastating fire in 1959 (destroying completely the interior). It was reopened in 1994, without hiding the fire marks. This church is also known to be the place where began the historic killing of São Domingos.
