March 21st, 1933: a hastily converted factory complex becomes a "protective custody camp" for opponents of the Nazi regime.
As the first permanent concentration camp it became a “School of Terror” where members of Hitler’s SS perfected their methods of physical and mental torture, skills they would implement in similar camps across Germany, and later Europe. As such, it holds a unenviable position in the history of the Holocaust.
The tour uses public transport (local train and then bus) to reach the memorial - the route closely following that taken by prisoners.
