You have already seen the most popular places in Vilnius and want to explore the way of living outside the city centre? Then the "Alternative Tour" of Vilnius with Locals is definitely the right thing to do! The tour starts with a bus drive to the Russian Market, where you can buy almost everything. From smoked and raw meat up to worn out shoes and electronic things. Flowers, fish, clothes and funeral stuff... maybe a little bit bizarr for foreigners, but quite common for locals to buy different things for small money. After that the guide takes you to Snipiskes. This area gives you an idea how some people live outside the city centre. No tarred roads lead you through this area of small properties with shabby houses. Most of them with no water connections inside the house. Some even burnt-down. Nevertheless you still got some quite modern houses in between. Another bus drive takes you to the station area. This part of the tour is especially attractive for people, who are interested in arts. Big paintings on house walls from different artists and a big guy in pants ;-) will be on your way. And you will have a short minute at a John Lennon monument. The tour ends at a market hall. You should go there and have a delicious bagel! The tour took 2,5 - 3 hours and beside the two bus drives you have to walk quite long, so prepare comfortable shoes ;-) I really liked the "Alternative Tour"! Thanks a lot to the friendly guides, you made a really good job! And thanks for all the interesting stories during the tour!

Highlights

Find some cool street art

Learn why there is a statue of Frank Zappa in Vilnius

Explore the dodgy area around the station

Say hi to Tony Soprano and John Lennon

Description

In Soviet times Vilnius was considered the most “Western” Soviet city because of its long-haired hippies and ideas of freedom. Nowadays most of the alternative ideas can be found by exploring abandoned areas, checking out street art and interesting buildings, bumping into random statues or even just by meeting some local drunks.

So, if you’ve seen enough churches and cute narrow streets, we suggest you leave the beaten track and discover the other side of Vilnius!

We’ll explore the dodgy area around the station which in the next 10 years will supposedly become one of the most prosperous districts in Vilnius, say hi to Tony Soprano, find out where the statue of John Lennon is hiding and get closer to the locals by taking public transport to some of the sights.

Wear comfortable shoes, come with heaps of positive energy, bring a camera for some unexpected shots and get to know alternative Vilnius!

Great tour for those looking something more off the beaten path
The guide was great, eloquent and attentive. Just one thing in terms of the route - Kalvariju market could be skipped or less time should be spent there. Hope this helps. Ruta
